Sara Guerrero-Rippberger, Emilia Shaffer-Del Valle, and Antonia Pérez
Xicana Connection
While sitting crocheting together at Antonia A. Pérez’s installation, Crochet Corner, 2016 (with ongoing socially-engaged crocheting and teaching on site), as part of the Jameco Exchange exhibition on 165th St, Jamaica, Queens, we realized that the three of us have something in common: a family map that reaches across the Río Grande/Río Bravo and connects lands, countries, cities and worlds, with undertones of activism, art, and feminisms (so relevant, too, to the histories of Jamaica, Queens). This is the Xicana connection! This kind of situation, of great personal interest and relevance to our lives, came together in this moment we shared in Jamaica, Queens, learning to crochet plastic bags under the guidance of Antonia. A fourth member of the connection was present in the form of a metal keychain memorializing the image of Xicana vocalist Selena Quintanilla.
About the artists
We are three people interested in art, in connections, in Mexico City, New York City, and Oaxaca and Fortín de las Flores, Veracruz; where the swimming pools are filled with gardenias. We all reside in New York City; we all work in various art worlds.
