Alicia Grullón
Jamaica, Jamaica
Jamaica, Jamaica is a site-specific social sculpture piece dealing with memory, the diaspora, and play. For an hour, I walked along Jamaica Avenue and asked pedestrians for directions. The addresses I used were from areas in Kingston, Jamaica. Some of the places I was asking directions for included: The Family Pride Supermarket at 1 Family Pride Plaza on Border Avenue, a home on 80 Mandela Road, The Rollington Town Police Station off of Giltress Street, Meadowbrook High School on Meadowbrook Avenue and The Toyota Jamaica Ltd. on Spanish Town Road.
About the artist
My name Alicia Grullón and I am an artist based in the Bronx. I was born and raised in New York City with immigrant parents from the Caribbean. My interests in life deal with creating equity in community and making art. In my work, I move between performance, video, and photography, channeling my interdisciplinary approach towards critiques on the politics of presence, an argument for the inclusion of disenfranchised communities in political and social spheres. Possible ideas for my performance: situations that have been or are currently relevant in my life. Subject of personal interest: some situations that have been relevant to my life have dealt with loss and belonging. As a child of immigrants my ideas on family and community were both distant and local. As people moved, immigrated to NYC or passed away, memory and history shape how I experience place/home/self. I am interested in how this manifests in my work.
